ABSTRACT:
Remedial investigations associated with the Superfund Program of the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) found highly elevated levels of mercury in sediment and fish samples from the Sudbury
River, Massachusetts.
Our study was conducted 1) to determine total mercury and methyl mercury concentrations in
freshwater mussels from the Sudbury River watershed, and 2) to provide the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency and Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection with site-specific
benthic invertebrate data for human health and ecological risk assessments of the river.
