The
three species of American mahogany
are listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species
of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which provides a framework for cooperation
and collaboration among trading nations. Effective November 15, 2003,
bigleaf mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) was listed in CITES
Appendix II. This listing imposes requirements for import and export of
bigleaf mahogany, including logs, sawn wood, veneer sheets, and plywood,
but not other parts, derivatives, and products, such as furniture.
