Hungry Goats Help Turtles -- Voice of America

The bog turtle is a federally threatened species known to occur in Cecil, Harford, Baltimore, and Carroll counties of Maryland. Besides illegal collection for the pet trade, the primary threat to bog turtles is loss of the unique wetlands on which they depend. See how goats have become a turtle’s best friend.

Nutria Eradication Efforts -- Voice Of America

Nutria use their beaver-sized incisors and powerful forefeet to dig under the marsh surface to feed directly on the root mat, leaving the marsh pitted with holes and deep swim canals. Voice of America recently followed Chesapeake Bay Field Office and USDA biologists as they assessed the successful nutria eradication program on Maryland's eastern shore.

Protecting a Tiny Turtle -- Voice of America

In Maryland, environmental officials are working to save one of the smallest and rarest turtles in North America.  The bog turtle had the power to move an entire highway project in the state of Maryland.  The tiny turtle is listed as an endangered species. It faces a disappearing habitat as well as poachers.
