Sandy Point's small size (327 acres) belies its importance as the largest nesting beach in the U.S. and its Territories for the world's largest sea turtle, the leatherback. |
Hawksbill and green sea turtles also nest here as do Least Terns. From April to September the beach literally becomes a egg incubator and nursery.
| The diversity created by the beach, woodland and wetland habitats provides a unique ecosystem for 225 plant species and 101 bird species including the Brown Pelican, Black-necked Stilt and Black-wiskered Vireo. |
