Wildlife

Sandy Point's small size (327 acres) belies its importance as the largest nesting beach in the U.S. and its Territories for the world's largest sea turtle, the leatherback.

Hawksbille

Hawksbill and green sea turtles also nest here as do Least Terns. From April to September the beach literally becomes a egg incubator and nursery.

The diversity created by the beach, woodland and wetland habitats provides a unique ecosystem for 225 plant species and 101 bird species including the Brown Pelican, Black-necked Stilt and Black-wiskered Vireo.
