Natural History
Located in the Jamica passage this dolomitized limestone reef island is thought to be 5 million years old. Claimed by the United States under the Guano Act in 1857, mining ended on Navassa in 1898.
A unique forest dominated by just four species (Ficus populnea, Coccoloba diversifolia, Sideroxylon foetidissimum and Metopium brownei).
The Island supports over 5,000 Red footed booby and is an important stop over site for neotropical migrant birds. The extensive marine habitat supports a substantial fishery.
