The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) leads the management of Breton National Wildlife Refuge and the endangered brown pelican. The importance of the refuge, the wilderness areas within the refuge and the brown pelican is obvious to our partners.

The Plaquemines and St. Bernard Parish 4H group helped the USFWS celebrate the centennial of the National Wildlife Refuge System in 2004. The 4H group also completed several habitat restoration projects on Breton Island. The 4H group was supported by the Louisiana State University AgCenter and the Gulf of Mexico Foundation.

President Teddy Roosevelt created Breton National Wildlife Refuge as the nation's second national wildlife refuge in 1904. The USFWS, the State of Louisiana and our partners celebrated the centennial of the creation of the refuge in 2004. Sam Hamilton, Administrator of the U.S. Fish, Southeast Region and Teddy Roosevelt IV spoke to the centennial gathering.

The USFWS would like to thank all our partners for their efforts to protect Breton National Wildlife Refuge and the brown pelican.

See the Links page for example projects.

We'd also like to thank ConocoPhillips for their support in the creation of the Brown Pelican Web pages and funding of portions of the habitat restoration and satellite tracking programs. The Friends of Louisiana Wildlife Refuges, Inc. also supported the creation of the Brown Pelican Web as well as many other projects and programs at the Southeast Louisiana Refuges Complex.
