The New and Improved Jeff Friend Trail Reopens We are pleased to announce the opening of the first fully accessible trail for disabled persons on the Refuge. Construction was recently completed on the Jeff Friend Trail which included resurfacing the trails, adding boardwalks, and improving the parking lot for disabled persons. The Mobile Patriots, a local basketball team that uses wheelchairs, successfully tried out the improved trail in October. Hurricane-damaged Mobile Street Boardwalk Repaired The public can once again enjoy good access to the beautiful white sand Refuge beaches on the Perdue Unit. Severely damaged by Hurricane Ivan in 2004, the Mobile Street Boardwalk has been repaired and now features all-weather binoculars for viewing birds and marine life. The Centennial Trail is now open!! This 2-mile trail connects the Jeff Friend and Pine Beach trails and features a wildlife-viewing platform and interpretive signs to learn about the wildlife and habitats of the maritime forest. A new restroom facility has also been installed on the Pine Beach Trail just north of the Centennial Trail entrance.
