Hunting Season Closures

Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge currently maintains a yearly hunt program. The primary objective of a national wildlife refuge is to provide habitat for the conservation and protection of wildlife. The harvest of surplus animals is one tool used to manage wildlife populations. Carefully managed hunts maintain wildlife populations at a level compatible with the environment, provide wholesome recreational opportunities, and permit the use of a valuable, renewable resource.

During hunting season (see our Calendar for exact dates) we will enact the following closures for the safety of our non-hunting public:

  1. The first part of the Wildlife Drive will be closed on November 26 and November 30 for the Quota Shotgun hunt. The first exit on Key Wallace Drive will have the tire shredders locked down allowing the public to enter there and use the second part of the drive with no entrance fee.

  2. The Key Wallace Hiking Trail will be closed for:

    • the 6 muzzleloader hunting days: October 19, 20, 25, 26, and 27,
      as well as December 15

    • the 1 youth hunting day: November 3

    • and the 5 shotgun hunting days: November 26, 30 and December 6, 7, and 8

Also please note that during fall and winter, waterfowl hunters are active on private property near the Green Paddling Trail. If you want more information, call the Refuge Visitor Center at 410-228-2677.
