Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge currently maintains a yearly hunt program. The primary objective of a national wildlife refuge is to provide habitat for the conservation and protection of wildlife. The harvest of surplus animals is one tool used to manage wildlife populations. Carefully managed hunts maintain wildlife populations at a level compatible with the environment, provide wholesome recreational opportunities, and permit the use of a valuable, renewable resource.
During hunting season (see our Calendar for exact dates) we will enact the following closures for the safety of our non-hunting public:
Also please note that during fall and winter, waterfowl hunters are active on private property near the Green Paddling Trail. If you want more information, call the Refuge Visitor Center at 410-228-2677.
