Symposium: Waterbirds & Rice Fields
October 31, 2007 at the Waterbird Society 31st Annual Meeting, Barcelona, Spain

Overview
Waterbird use of agricultural wetlands has increased as natural wetlands continue to decline worldwide. Rice fields occupy more of the world’s land than any other wetland crop – over 1.5 million km2 – and the crop is the primary source of calories for over half of the world’s human population. In some cases, the use of rice habitats is considered to be essential to sustaining waterbird populations. In contrast, other situations exist where rice farming sis seen as a threat to waterbird conservation. A large literature has begun to develop that documents the use of rice habitats by waterbirds throughout the world, however, significant gaps remain. Available information has never been comprehensively reviewed and analyzed at a global scale. This symposium will bring together researchers from around the world to synthesize existing research, discern management approaches for optimizing the rice-waterbirds relationship, and identify new areas for investigation.
