March 14, 2006
The North American Wetlands Conservation Council (Council) met on March 14, 2006, in Grand Island, Nebraska, to select wetlands conservation projects that will be recommended to the Migratory Bird Conservation Commission (Commission) for funding approval on June 14, 2006.
The total funding of $71,601,753 for Fiscal Year (FY) 2006 is allocated as follows: All Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection, and Restoration Act receipts must be used in U.S. coastal ecosystems, while all other receipts will be allocated 50% to U.S., 45% to Canadian, and 5% to Mexican projects. This designation results in country allocations of: United States, $46,338,033 (including $2,000,000 allocated for the Small Grants Program); Canada, $22,732,734; and Mexico, $2,530,986.
A total of $48,866,239 of this FY 2006 funding has been spent on proposals approved by the Commission on September 21, 2005, and on March 8, 2006, leaving $22,735,514 in available funding allocated as follows: United States, $4,883,799 (including $2,000,000 allocated for the Small Grants Program); Canada, $17,851,134; Mexico, $581. A portion of the United States’ remaining funds, $2,435,000, is derived from fines paid under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and must be spent in the Buzzards Bay Watershed Area of Massachusetts.
Project Proposal Recommendations
The Council selected the following 47 U.S. Small Grant Program proposals, reflecting
a total of $2,007,758 in funding. Because the Commission has previously authorized
$2,000,000 for the Small Grants program in 2006, the Council will recommend
that the Commission authorize an additional $7,758 to fully fund this slate.
The proposals’ partnership contributions amount to $16,582,996.
