Mission

The mission of the National Wildlife Refuge System is to work with others, to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife, and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.

The Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge will:

  • provide resting and feeding areas for migrating water birds and passerines;
  • provide and conserve a variety of habitats representing coastal Southeastern Virginia;
  • actively manage land to enhance the quality of wildlife habitat;
  • provide a quality experience for all visitors throughout the facility, exhibitry, trails, and all programs;
  • educate priority publics on the importance of Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge;
  • establish partnerships to share resources thereby further increasing educational opportunities for priority publics;
  • promote volunteerism and cultivate a Visitor Center volunteer program which creates "life-members" in the mission of the Department of the Interior.
