Deer/Feral Hog Hunt Lottery Information
New Procedures — Please Read Carefully — Zones Have Changed

How to Apply for the lottery hunt:
To apply for the lottery hunt at Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park review the information included on this Web site. The Web site includes the rules and regulations for the hunt as well as zone maps. The zones have changed and it is important that you determine the new zones to ensure you select the zone you prefer to hunt. Once you have determined the date and zone you prefer you will go to the following Web site to apply for the hunt. Printed applications can be accepted and are available on the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Web site. Printed applications do not have options to allow the selection of zone. The hunt number for the hunt is #205.

How to Hunt Standby:
On each day of the hunt, the refuge gates will open at 4:00 a.m. and close promptly at 5:00 a.m. no late arrivals will be permitted after 5:00 a.m. Standby hunters will be processed beginning at 5:00 a.m. Follow the directions of the parking attendants to find the appropriate place to park. You will park in the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge parking lots, enter the visitor center to register, and listen to the mandatory pre-hunt briefing. All hunters must be out of the field for final pickup by 6:00 p.m. and must check out at the refuge check station.

There will be a standby drawing to fill vacant hunter "slots" at 5:15 a.m. or earlier each morning. You are encouraged to come and hunt all days of the hunt as standby. Individuals hunting standby will be charged the $10.00 daily hunt fee if they are selected. Standby hunters must follow the same regulations as those who were selected in the lottery. Print the Rules and Regulations, sign the bottom portion and bring with you to the standby drawing.

Scouting:
We encourage you to visit the hunt zones during daylight hours during the week prior to the hunt to scout your selected zone. Scouting will be permitted September 27-October 3, 2008, from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm. You must check in and out at the refuge visitor contact station. During the pre-hunt scouting trips, do not add any trail markings or alter the control signs. No weapons are allowed during the scouting trips. Wear a blaze orange hat and body covering to help us identify scouting activities. When visiting the hunt zones to scout your zone you may park at either Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge or at Little Island City Park. Parking fees apply. Biking to your zone is recommended.

Directions to the refuge from Interstate 264 East:
Exit 21A First Colonial Road. Right onto First Colonial Road. First Colonial Road will bend left and become Oceana Boulevard. Travel Oceana Blvd. 3.8 miles and turn right onto General Booth Blvd. Travel General Booth Blvd. 2.7 miles. Turn left onto Princess Anne Road and travel 0.8 miles. Stay in the center lane and proceed straight through the light onto Sandbridge Road. Travel 5.2 miles and turn right onto Sandpiper Road. Travel 3.9 miles to the entrance of Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge.
