This U.S. Fish and Wildlife Region's nickname aptly describes the two most prominent physical features of the eight-state area. The eastern portion is comprised of the Great Plains, primarily the short-grass prairies. To the west rise the Rocky Mountains, and parts of the inter-mountain west beyond the Continental Divide.
The National Wetlands Inventory
The National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service produces information on the characteristics, extent, and status of wetlands and deepwater habitats. In addition, they provide wetland maps, status maps, interactive mapping tools, digital wetland data, digital map downloads, status and trends reports, wetland publications, and plants and hydric soils lists.
