Chase Lake National Wildlife Refuge is home to one of the worlds largest American white pelican colonies. In 2006, more than 29,000 breeding birds nested here, along with several hundred double-crested cormorants, ring-billed and California gulls, and caspian terns.

Chase Lake Pass (see map) allows visitors to view the vast expanse of Chase Lake, scan for nesting pelicans, and view adult pelicans entering and leaving the Refuge to feed in the regions numerous wetlands.

From April to September to protect nesting pelicans, Special Use Permits are required to enter the Refuge. The only access permitted is by foot. Please contact the Refuge Manager for current regulations.

Areas surrounding the Refuge offer good opportunities for bird watching. A birdlist is available identifying 296 species of birds seen on the Refuge or within the surrounding area.
