Fact Sheet

  • Established in 1908 by Executive Order under President Theodore Roosevelt as a “Reserve and Breeding Ground for Native Birds”, making it the second oldest refuge in North Dakota.

  • H.H. McCumber, who settled in North Dakota in 1905, was the first refuge manager for Chase Lake.

  • The refuge consists of 4,385 total acres, which 4,155 acres have been designated as wilderness area which was established in 1975 under the Wilderness Protection Act of 1964. This is one of only two wilderness refuge areas in the state of North Dakota.

  • Consists of 50% Water, 45% Native and Tame Grasses, and 5% Marsh and Brush.

  • Chase Lake NWR is home to one of the largest breeding colonies of American white pelicans in North America.

  • Designated as one of America's 500 Most Important Bird Areas by the American Bird Conservancy (ABC).
