District Programs

The Chase Lake Wetland Management District currently manages 128 Waterfowl Production Areas and five Wildlife Development Areas for a total of 38,718 acres. Waterfowl Production Areas are open to hunting, fishing and trapping. These areas also provide opportunities for wildlife viewing, photography and environmental education. WDA's are lands purchased by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) as part of North Dakota's Garrison Diversion Unit. Reclamation developed these areas for wildlife by restoring drained wetlands and planting cropland acres to grass. WDA's were transferred to the Service to be managed primarily for the production of migratory birds and for public use.

Numerous acres of wetland and grassland easements are monitored by the District staff. Halfway Lake National Wildlife Refuge is also administered from the Chase Lake office.

Prescribed burning rejuvenates grasses, sets back succession, and controls noxious weeds.

Another District program, Partners for Fish and Wildlife, provides financial incentives and technical assistance for landowners to restore, enhance, and conserve wildlife habitat on private land.

Initiated in 1989, the Chase Lake Headquarters Office also administers the Chase Lake Prairie Project, a national flagship project for the Prairie Pothole joint venture of the North American Waterfowl Management Plan.
