Wildlife and Habitat

Established in 1908 for the protection of American white pelicans, Chase Lake is one of the nation's oldest National Wildlife Refuges and one of North America's largest white pelican colonies nests on the Refuge. Approximately one-half of the Refuge's 4,385 acres consists of Chase Lake. The upland surrounding the Lake is both native and tame grassland. Except for 230 acres, in the southwest corner, the refuge is a wilderness area. The Refuge was designated as an Important Bird Area in the United States by the American Bird Conservancy because of its international significance to wildlife.
