Prairie Pothole Joint Venture

In 1987, the Prairie Pothole Joint Venture (PPJV), a conservation partnership, was established by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service). This partnership, which was established under The North American Waterfowl Management Plan, consists of the Service, state wildlife agencies in Iowa, Montana, Minnesota, and North and South Dakota, and several conservation organizations. It is the single largest effort ever undertaken to protect wetlands, waterfowl and other wildlife.

The Plan has focused much of its efforts on waterfowl populations and waterfowl habitat. However, the PPJV has put in to practice an integrated approach to wetland management that combines the needs of waterfowl and non-game species such as shorebirds.

The Prairie Pothole Joint Venture is working toward the:

  • protection of wetland and associated upland habitat.

  • restoration of wetland and associated upland habitat.

  • enhancement of wetland and associated upland habitat.

  • conservation of habitat that will be capable of supporting millions of breeding ducks.

  • stabilization or increase in populations of declining wildlife species that depend on wetland and grassland complexes.
