Wildlife and Habitat

An abundance of wetlands and large tracts of grasslands within the Refuge attract numerous grassland and wetland nesting migratory birds, plus a wide variety of other wildlife species. In the central part of the Refuge, breeding waterfowl densities often exceed 100 pairs per square mile.

Grassland management is done mostly through cooperative grazing agreements, haying agreements or prescribed burning. The focus of management operations is keeping the grassland resources in good condition for ground nesting birds with emphasis on waterfowl.
