The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has prepared a Supplement to the Environmental Assessment (EA) for the 2009 Fire Management Plan for Alligator River and Pea Island National Wildlife Refuges as part of the process in revising this plan.  This revision is needed to ensure the Fire Management Plan more accurately describes how the refuges will choose fuel treatment intervals and locations in light of the significant stresses the refuges are undergoing with drought, coastal storms, wildfires, and compounding effects from sea level rise.  The revision will also reformat the plan to conform to the newest interagency template approved by National Wildfire Coordinating Group and FWS guidance.  The plan considers all aspects of fire management on the refuges, from wildfire suppression to prescribed fire.

The Service is seeking comments on the Supplement to the EA and the draft 2012 Fire Management Plan.  Links to the Supplement to the EA and the draft 2012 Fire Management Plan are available at the bottom of this page.  Hard copies of the documents are available for viewing at the Dare County libraries (Kill Devil Hills, Manteo, and Hatteras) and at the North Carolina Refuges Visitor Center in Manteo (100 Conservation Way).

Comments should be sent to Kelley Van Druten, PO Box 1969, Manteo, North Carolina 27954, or you may send comments by electronic mail to with a subject line, “Draft FMP Comments.”  Please include your name and home address or e-mail address in the message.  Your comments are needed by 4 p.m. on October 13th in order to be considered in the development of the final 2012 Fire Management Plan.
