Parts of Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge Reopen on Sunday, December 2, 2012

Refuge Manager Mike Bryant announced today that parts of Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge will reopen tomorrow morning.  The refuge has been closed due to storm damage to NC Highway 12 resulting from Hurricane Sandy.  The roadblock established by NC Department of Transportation and manned by the Dare County Sherriff’s Department has been moved to the area just south of the temporary bridge over Irene Inlet.  To avoid possible impacts to NC 12 repair work, Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge will be open from the north only as far as the new inlet established by Hurricane Irene last year.  Only 4X4 vehicles capable of traversing deep sand should cross to the south side of the temporary bridge.

NC Department of Transportation District Engineer Jerry Jennings assured refuge staff that visitors who remain north of Irene Inlet will have no impact on NC Highway 12 repairs.

The Pea Island Visitor Center will reopen tomorrow, as well.  Visitor Center hours are 9 am - 4 pm daily.

As always, the refuge is open daylight hours only and vehicles are limited to designated roadways and parking areas.  For additional information, contact the National Wildlife Refuges Visitor Center in Manteo at 252-473-1131.
