Heffley Named Conservation Communicator of the Year
The North Carolina Chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society honored Fish and Wildlife Service employee Cindy Heffley as its Conservation Communicator of the Year at its annual awards banquet on January 21. Cindy is a visitor services specialist at the Alligator River and Pea Island National Wildlife Refuges.
Cindy was cited for improving the quality of the education and interpretation programs on the refuges and increased the participation by the public, volunteers, and partner agencies and organizations. She has added programs at both refuges and increased the visibility of the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge through regular interpretive programs, tram tours, and school field trips.
She improved the organization and continuity of programs at Dare County’s middle schools to better educate the students and enlist the support of teachers in the schools. Cindy also facilitated the movement of Wildfest to the Wright Brothers National Historic Site and recruited students from schools as volunteer group leaders and new conservation agencies and organizations as exhibitors.
Cindy was accepted into the Climate Steward Educator Program administered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to raise the public’s awareness of the effects of climate change. She has been selected as NOAA’s Southern Region Representative. Her first group of local climate stewards is in the AVID program (Advancement Via Individual Development) at First Flight High School.
