Eastern NC National Wildlife Refuges Close Due to Hurricane Irene Approach
Pea Island, Alligator River, Currituck, Mackay Island, and Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuges will be closed to all public recreational uses and all public access, with the exception of emergency access required to protect life and property, from Friday, August 26, 2011 until further notice due to the approach of Hurricane Irene.
These refuges will remain closed until after the storm passes and refuge staff have the opportunity to assess conditions. Depending on those conditions, all or parts of each refuge may remain closed for recovery operations and public safety. Visitors should be aware that due to the amount of time needed to complete preparations, road gates and closure signs will be effective immediately in some areas.
The Pea Island Visitor Center is closed until further notice. The z Pocosin Lakes Visitor may be closed on Friday, but will be definitely be closed on Saturday, as well as it's normal closed days - Sunday and Monday. All visitor services on all the refuges have been suspended until further notice.
All refuges have implemented Hurricane Preparedness Plans. Refuge staff and volunteers are preparing facilities and equipment for the storm.
