Royalty joins Wings Over Water Wildlife Festival

The six-day Wings Over Water Wildlife Festival to be held on the Outer Banks of North Carolina Nov. 3-8 will include a free performance of "Bloody Mary & the Virgin Queen" presented by Elizabeth R and Co. at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Cape Hatteras Secondary School auditorium.

This production is an outrageous musical comedy about Queen Elizabeth and her half-sister Mary. The fast-paced one-hour play takes place in the summer of 2009. It is set in London’s Westminster Abbey, where Queen Elizabeth and her sister have been buried in the same tomb for more than 400 years. During those years, visitors touring the Abbey have left souvenirs, and many more have ignored the tour guide and talked about the political situation in their home countries.

The play starts at the end of the last tour of the day. The sisters, played by Miss Barbara Hird and Miss Marsha Warren, arise from their tomb and resume the battle of their differences and in their comedic romp, use the information gleaned from tourists. Now in its 12th season, the hit show stars Hird as Queen Elizabeth and Ms. Marsha Warren as Bloody Mary.

Elizabeth R & Company is the resident professional theatre company at Roanoke Island Festival Park. The production company has partnered with the Wings Over Water Wildlife Festival to present this first- ever presentation on Hatteras Island.

In addition to the play, birding, natural history, photography and paddling are some of the other types of programs planned for the festival which spans Veteran's Day weekend.

Programs at the Island Farm on Roanoke Island and the Currituck Lighthouse will enlighten and entertain participants while sharing some of the history of the area.

This year's keynote dinner will be held in the Museum and Grand Mall at Roanoke Island Festival Park. Catered by Kelly's Restaurant, the keynote address will be presented by Mark Buckler, award-winning nature photographer. The cost of the keynote dinner is $35 and registration is required. Dinner includes beer, wine and nonalcoholic beverages.
