Refuge Wildlife Olympics a Hit at Mt Olivet UMC Bible School

On Friday, Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge staff and volunteers took the activity-based Wildlife Olympics to the final day of Bible School at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church. The almost 150 "campers" who had spent a week at "Camp Edge" for VBS used their recreation time to learn about and mimic wildlife behavior. Shown above, two campers "crabwalk" with refuge intern Sarah Brown, copying the behavior of ghost crabs on Outer Banks beaches.

Besides bringing the Wildlife Olympics, the Refuge brought along the big, green walking alligator to greet the children. Here, Graham Barnes (in the costume), son of Edgar and Michele Barnes, befriends Dorrie Smith, daughter of Van Smith and Anna Barrett-Smith. Photo credit: USFWS, Bonnie Strawser.
