Currituck National Wildlife Refuge Expands Closed Area on the Monkey Island Unit North of Corolla, NC
Currituck National Wildlife Refuge Manager Mike Hoff announced today that the closed area on the Monkey Island Unit of the refuge will be expanded. The closed area will now start 1 mile north of Corolla, North Carolina, and continue north approximately 750 yards (See Image Below). This area, from the leading edge of the primary dune westward to the Currituck Sound, will remain closed until further notice. The expanded closure was necessary to control access to an old naval target site while contractors survey the area as part of an on going remediation project. The vehicle access portion on the beach will be unaffected by this closure but motorists need to use caution as surveyors with equipment may be present on the beach after the project starts April 21, 2008.
