Federal Highways Administration Begins $7 Million Road Project Contract on Alligator River Refuge
Refuge Manager Mike Bryant announced today the start of a Federal Highways Administration Contract to upgrade and repair 39 miles of roads on Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. "We're fortunate to accomplish this work through the Federal Highways Administration. With our current budget, there's no way our roads would have received this level of attention with refuge funding," he added. The contract includes rehabilitation and improvement 39 miles of roads, including Bear, Brier Hall, Cedar, Dry Ridge North, Grouse, Laurel Bay, Navy Shell, Pamlico, Point Peter, Pollock, Pump, Sawyer Lake, Twiford, and Whipping Creek. Currently, the contract runs through late May, 2008 and is for the amount of $6,9917,930.
This Federal Highways Administration contract was awarded to WECC INC in Fayetteville, NC. Contract Superintendent Pat Paluso commented, "We understand the importance of accomplishing this project with as little impact as possible on refuge visitors. Whenever possible, road closures will be limited to our working hours. Unless safety is an issue, we'll try to keep all the roads in a condition to be open after hours and on week-ends." WECC has contracted with Ray Pate Engineering for survey work and with GET Solutions for geo-technical work.
Bryant added, "The inability to drive some of these roads for a short period of time is a small price to pay for the long-term gain of having better roads on this refuge. I encourage everyone to be patient and appreciate the long-term good that will result from this project. And, for public safety, we want everyone to be aware there will be a lot of heavy truck-traffic on the refuge for the next 8-10 months." At this time, work is planned to begin on two sections: Sawyer Lake/Butler/Cedar/Pollock and Twiford/Laurel Bay/Brier Hall.

The 39 miles of roads in this project include Bear, Brier Hall, Cedar, Dry Ridge North, Grouse, Laurel Bay, Navy Shell, Pamlico, Point Peter, Pollock, Pump, Sawyer Lake, Twiford, and Whipping Creek. It is unlikely more than two roads will be closed at any given time. For more information or for updates on the progress, visit http://www.fws.gov/alligatorriver/roads.html or call 252-473-1131.
