Refuge Manager Mike Bryant takes a moment at a recent volunteer awards banquet to say thanks to some of the refuge volunteers for all they have done to help national wildlife refuges. Currently, one major need is volunteers who can serve as "receptionist" for 3-4 hours once a week in the FWS office in Manteo. Duties involve answering the phone, greeting walk-ins, and doing light office work. Call 252-473-1131 ext 230 for details.
Tom White, Jr, President of the Coastal Wildlife Refuge Society invites everyone who cherishes our local wildlife and wildlands to join the Friends of the Refuge Work Teams to help Alligator River and Pea Island National Wildlife Refuges. The first meeting of the year is scheduled for Thursday, January 19 at 7:30 pm at the Refuge Headquarters in Manteo.
During 2005, work teams cleared brush from paddling trails and launch sites, built benches and signs, planted shrubs, published leaflets, put together powerpoint presentations, staffed the Visitor Center and the Manteo front desk, hosted clean-ups, lead bird walks, built picnic tables, installed interpretive signs, built donation boxes, hosted two refuge open houses, and accomplished many other projects to help these refuges.
"Refuge budgets are now tighter than they've ever been," White added. "They need our help more in 2006 than they've ever needed it before. And, there's something that everyone can do. It doesn't matter if you work full time, live out-of-state, or have limited skills or abilities. There's something that everyone can do to help out... there are just so many needs."
The group regularly meets the second Thursday evening of every month at 7:30 pm; however, the January meeting is on the 19th- due to holiday commitments.
