Applied Research Program in Nutrition

Capability/Technical Service - Experimental diet development and production in experiemental quantities.

More and more species are being held in National Fish Hatcheries as captive broodstock held in refugia. Although broodstock diets are commercially available, many questions still remain on the nutritional adequacy of these fish feeds.Poor nutrition can affect survival, fecundity, egg size, composition, egg hatchability and fry viability. Analysis of the fish and their reproductive products have identified specific nutritents needed by broodstock to maximize survival, fecundity, egg size, composition, egg hatchability, and fry viaability. While this is an important start additional research is needed to fully meet the nutritional needs of broodstock fish held in captivity.

Sample Projects

1) Critical Nutritent Needs for Listed Broodstock.
Few well structured feedings trials have bee conducted to determine species specific nutritional requirements. To meet this information need Abernathy FTC, Mora National Fish Hatchery and Technology Center (Southwest Region), and Lahontan National Fish Hatchery (California/Nevada Region) joined together to collect and analysis broodtsiock diets for key nutrients required by captive broodtsocks. One Lahontan cutthroat feeding trial has been completed and a second trial has been started as part of athis study to formulate broodstock diets for these specific species.

2) Fish Feed Development for Captive Propagation of Threatened and Endangered Species.
Preliminary feeding trials with coho and steelhead trout were conducted to evaluate the use of different lipds (fat) sources on fish used as surrogates for threatened and endangered species held in captivity. Data analysis and manuscript development are underway. Information on bonytail chub fed diferent diets BioOregon announced that its popular moist fish feed called BioDiet Starter would no longer be manufactured as the company was undergoing a merger with Skretting. No other companies are capable of producing a similar high moisture fish feed. BioDiet Starter was particularly popular at Chinook salmon hatcheries as many salmon culturists have observed that this species would accept only a moist feed when the fry begin to feed for the first time. Therefore, AFTC initiated a conference call with representatives of four feed companies to discuss alternative feeds for first-feeding Chinook. Personnel from numerous Pacific Region National Fish Hatcheries participated in the call and had a chance to talk to feed company representatives about alternative feeds.
