New Media Working Group
Conserving the Nature of America

What is New Media?

Traditional news media — newspapers, magazines, television, radio — is augmented and often supplanted by Internet-based media in which individuals, organizations and traditional news media participate in information exchange.

We define new media as emerging and typically interactive electronic technologies used for communication to and among broad and niche audiences.

The mission of the New Media Working Group is to identify new media likely to advance the Service’s communication efforts, identify the situations where they would be most applicable, then help establish pilot programs for those media. Pilot programs should 1) assess the ease of incorporating the new medium into existing communication efforts, 2) evaluate the medium’s effectiveness, and 3) if it seems the medium would be a worthwhile tool, provide guidance on making its use more widespread in the Service. If you have an idea for a pilot program, send a short descriptive paragraph about the project and how you would like the New Media Working Group to be involved to Diane Knudson (diane_knudson@fws.gov) with Pilot Program Idea in the subject line.

At present, the New Media Working Group is addressing the Service's use of several New Media concepts:
