Eagles Thrive
Just about every year there is a new record high for eagles on Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge in Michigan, according to refuge manager Steve Kahl. The eagle population is at its peak right now when the birds lay eggs and sit on their nests. There were four active nests last year and two new ones added recently.
The eagle population has been increasing every since the pesticide DDT was banned in 1972. "The restoration of the bald eagle is really one of the greatest conservation success stories in our country," said Kahl. An auto tour route will make it easier to see the eagles starting in late 2010. For now, the best way to see the eagles at Shiawassee Refuge is by boat, or to hike to the refuge's Grefe Tower along the Ferguson Bayou Trail.
