Pacific Region Hires Science Leader for Climate Change Initiative
October 6, 2009

Carol SchulerCarol Schuler has been named Assistant Regional Director for Climate Change and Science Application for the Pacific Region of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This new position reflects our commitment to science leadership and partnerships as it the Service addresses climate change impacts to fish, wildlife and plants. Ms. Schuler will begin her new duties in December 2009, at which time she can be reached at: carol_schuler@fws.gov or by mail at US Fish and Wildlife Service, Regional Office, 911 NE 11th Ave., Portland, Oregon 97232-4181.

Service Releases Climate Change Strategy for Public Review and Comment
September 23, 2009

As part of the Department of the Interior’s commitment to building a coordinated strategy to respond to the impacts of climate change on the nation’s natural resources, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service released a proposed strategic plan that will guide the agency’s efforts to respond to the unprecedented threat posed by global warming. Public comments will be accepted through November 23, 2009.

Landscape Conservation Cooperatives

As mentioned above, the Service recently released a draft Climate Change Strategic Plan for a 60-day public comment period that complements the Department of the Interior’s Secretarial Order No. 3289, and calls for the creation of regional climate science partnerships and Landscape Conservation Cooperatives (LCCs) with universities, tribes, states, federal agencies and other partners and stakeholders. These LCCs are integral to the Service’s climate adaptation efforts, providing scientific and technical support to managers and partnerships responsible for developing and implementing conservation strategies at landscape scales in a changing climate.

Conserving the Nature of America in a Changing Climate

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports in their “Summary for Policymakers of the Synthesis Report of the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report” that “(w)arming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observations of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising global average sea level.”
