The Federal Junior Duck Stamp program uses art to teach the importance of conserving our wetlands and to expand the knowledge of the Federal Duck Stamp as a conservation program. The program targets youth from kindergarten through high school in public and private schools for participation in activities that will lead to a greater awareness of our nation's living resources. It enables students to experience hands-on, creative-learning activities centered around conservation.
Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge has the privilege of being involved in this exciting opportunity by serving as Washington State's collection and judging center for hundreds of wonderful pieces of student art each year. The Refuge also displays the artwork of the year's winning students periodically within the Visitor Center.
Students from all 50 states and the District of Columbia participate in the Junior Duck Stamp Design contest held annually. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service awards certificates of appreciation to all students who enter the contests. Local school entries are forwarded to state contests, and first, second, third place and honorable mention ribbons are awarded to the student artists whose works are selected in each state by a panel of judges comprised of artists and waterfowl experts. A Best-of-Show winner is also selected and sent to Washington, D.C., to compete in the National Contest. The first place winner of the national competition, their art teacher, and one of their parents receive a three-day trip to Washington, D.C., to attend the Federal Duck Stamp Contest at the Department of Interior. The first place winner also receives a $2,500 scholarship award and his/her art work becomes the design of the following year's Federal Junior Duck Stamp.
