U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Proposes to Protect the Wolverine

Climate Change Impacting Wolverine Population--The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) is seeking your input on a proposal to protect the North American wolverine as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The wolverine, an iconic species of the Mountain west, has made a remarkable recovery in the past half century since its near extirpation in the early 1900s due to broad-scale predator trapping and poisoning programs. We want to continue to ensure its existence in the future even in light of predicted loss of snowpack in the wolverine’s snowy, high elevation habitat. There will be a news release, our species page and FAQ as well as federal register notice to go with this. There will also be a public comment period. The title of this action for the public notices page is: American Wolverine Proposed Listing.

Federal and State Wildlife Officials Urge Keeping Wild Tortoises Wild and Captive Tortoises Captive

Pet Tortoise Pick-Up Service Ends Desert tortoises have lived in the area that is now the Mojave Desert for millions of years. Today, they are rarely seen in the wild and in some places have disappeared entirely. Even though desert tortoise populations have declined in the wilds of the harsh desert, captive pet tortoises have been able to thrive with regular food and water. Their longevity and the uncontrolled breeding of captive tortoises has resulted in thousands of unwanted pets, many of which have been brought to the Desert Tortoise Conservation Center.

As part of its ongoing efforts to conserve our nation’s most imperiled species, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) has identified riparian lands that are important for the recovery of the southwestern willow flycatcher. This small songbird, which nests in vegetation along rivers and streams or other wetlands, is known to occur only in Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas and Utah, and has been listed as endangered since 1995 under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).
