1994 Recovery Plan

The Desert Tortoise (Mojave Population) Recovery Plan (28 MB PDF was completed in 1994. The Plan created recovery units within the six million acres of land where tortoises live. Each unit was then analyzed to address the threats to the species in that area, taking into consideration the multiple uses of the land such as grazing, mining, off-highway vehicle use, and development. Management actions were then suggested for each recovery unit. This approach allowed land management acencies in each state to take the tortoise into consideration as they developed their land-use plans.
