Waterfowl

Due to the management capabilities of Swan Lake wetland impoundments and moist soil units the refuge attracts large concentrations of waterfowl during the fall and spring migrations.

Duck numbers can exceed 200,000 during the peak fall migrations and over 100,000 during peak spring migrations.

Canada goose numbers tend to be highest in January and February where they average around 20-40,000.

Snow Goose concentrations in the fall and spring can range from 100,000 to 800,000.

Swan Lake NWR is a wonderful place to see a wide diveristy of water birds.
