2008 Refuge Photo Contest Rules

Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge and the Friends of Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge are sponsoring their sixth annual 2008 Amateur Photo Contest.  Photos must be taken in public areas on the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge or its satellite refuge (Michigan Islands NWR) or Green Point Environmental Learning Center, between September 1, 2007 and August 31, 2008.  Photographers may enter only one (1) photo per category.  The categories are as follow:

Wildlife/Plantlife – mammals, birds, fish, insects, reptiles, wildflowers, grass, trees, etc.

Habitat – a refuge scene with or without wildlife

People – engaged in an activity or included in a scene on the refuge (volunteers, people hunting, fishing, birdwatching, education program, etc.)

Young Nature Photographers - a special category just for young photographers up to 16-years-old

The photos will be displayed at the Refuge Open House Weekend on September 6, 2008.  Visitors will select their favorite photos in each category.  Ribbons and small prizes will be awarded.  Official contest rules are as follow:

  1. Photographers must be non-professional; this is an amateur contest. All entries must be photographs taken in public areas at Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge or its satellite refuge (Michigan Islands NWR) or Green Point Environmental Learning Center, between September 1, 2007 and August 31, 2008. No entries from closed areas will be accepted unless taken during a refuge-sponsored activity like the Open House Weekend.

  2. All photographs should be 5" x 7" or 8" x 10". Black and white or color photos are acceptable.  No matted photos, please!

  3. Mail or deliver all entries to Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge Photo Contest, 6975 Mower Road, Saginaw, Michigan 48601. On the back of the photo, include your name, address, phone number, category entered, the title of the photo, and the date and location of where it was taken.

  4. All entries must be received by or postmarked by September 1, 2008.

  5. Winning photographs will be scanned by the refuge and may be used for non-profit publications, web pages and presentations.  Winning photographs may be used for various displays at special events throughout the year.  Entries not selected may also be scanned and used for the above purposes.  Photographers may either donate their photos to the refuge or make arrangements to have their photos returned, i.e. provide a postage paid envelope or pick up photos from the refuge following the announcement of the winners in October.

  6. While extreme care will be taken in handling all entries, the refuge cannot be responsible for any damage to photographs.

  7. Winners will be announced in October, 2008.
