Celebrate Backyard Wildlife!

July is Backyard Wildlife Month at Seney.  Special programs, displays and activities throughout the month focus on our nonhuman neighbors.

Wildlife Wednesdays
Wednesday nights in July and August, 7-9:30p.m. 

Join us Wednesdays this month for an evening guided auto tour of the Refuge backcountry. We'll be on the lookout for loons, eagles, deer, beaver, and other wildlife.

Protected Species Month

From wolves to karner blue butterflies, Michigan is home to a variety of species that need our protection.  Take the wildlife drive and check out the visitor center exhibits to learn more about some of these species.

Mussels, Insects and Wolves' Oh My!
Tuesdays and Saturdays in August

Visit this informal walk up station to interact with the rangers, participate in hands on activities and learn about Michigan's protected species.

Protected Species Cycling
Every Thursday in August
9a.m.

No, you won't see osprey on a bike, but bring out your bike and join a ranger to look for protected wildlife.  Bike rides will be approximately 4 miles.  Please bring along plenty of food and water as needed, and dress for the weather.

 

Sullivan Creek National Fish Hatchery
Saturday, August 7
1p.m. - 4p.m.

Join us at this fish hatchery in Brimley to celebrate the dedication of their new building.   Sullivan Creek is home to approximately 14,000 broodstock lake trout, which produce an average of five million eggs per year.  Tours throughout the day.

Jr Duckstamp Art Display
August  28 thru September 2
9a.m. ' 5p.m.

The Refuge Visitor Center will once again display 52 pieces of original Duckstamp artwork by young artists across the country. Each state's winning piece will be on display. This is a great chance to see some fine artwork, learn more about the Duckstamp program, and gear up for Hunting and Fishing Month in September.

This seventh annual, fun filled day is best suited for scouts in elementary school grades K-4. Join us for exciting and fun opportunities to explore Seney National Wildlife Refuge and complete requirements for Badges, Try-Its, Arrow Points and Achievements! Pre registration is required. Contact your scout council or the refuge for registration materials or more information. Older Scouts (grades 5 and up) are invited to attend.

June 2005 Children's Fishing Day - Catch the Excitement!

Contest Rules:
Contestants should register at the Visitor Center before going fishing. Fishing is only permitted from the shore along the fishing loop and designated pools.

Prizes:
1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes will be awarded in four age categories (5 and under, 6-8, 9-12, and 13-17) for the largest northern pike and perch. In the case of multiple entries, only the largest entry for each angler will be considered for the contest. Everyone child who registers will receive a door prize!
