Wildlands and Wildlife

photos of wildlife on Ottawa NWRWildlands: When visiting Ottawa NWR you will be able to see habitat reflective of the historic Great Black Swamp. A collection of marshes, wooded wetlands, scrub/shrub, meadows, and an estuary comprise the refuge today and preserves its' cultural history. Learn more about Ottawa's habitat management .

Wildlife: Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is a resting area for migratory birds and is home to our treasured national symbol, the bald eagle. The Refuge is also home to many mammals such as white-tailed deer, muskrats, and mink. Not to mention, our wetlands are complete with a fair share of insects, fish, amphibians, and reptiles that add to the richness of marsh life.

Find out the best times to see waterfowl, shorebirds, raptors, wading birds, and song birds by viewing our wildlife calendar.
