Controlled Waterfowl Hunts

Youth and Adult waterfowl hunting is permitted by permit only. 12 blinds are hunted on the perimeter of the Refuge Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday until noon. Hiking trail areas are excluded from waterfowl hunts and remain open to the general public.

The Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge partners with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife (ODOW), to conduct controlled hunts.

How to Apply:

Applications are available by accessing the ODOW webpage at www.ohiodnr.com/wildlife. Applications are available June 1st through July 31st. You may apply for controlled hunts online using Visa/Mastercard/Discover. Or, if you prefer to submit an application via U.S. mail, you may download a hard-copy of adult or youth controlled hunt applications. Applications must be returned by July 31st to ODOW. Applications may not be faxed or e-mailed.

Additional information is available by calling 1-800-WILDLIFE (1-800-945-3543).

Applications must be submitted in the name of an adult. If the same name appears on multiple applications, all applications will be disqualified and the fee(s) forfeited. For youth hunts one hunter must be 17 years of age or under. All youth hunters must be accompanied by an adult, 18 years of age or older.

The application fee is $3 per area. Applicants may apply for all hunts using the same application. Independent drawings will be held for each area, thus the application fee applies to each area. In other words, if you check 4 boxes, you must submit $12.

Application fees are non-refundable. If you are not drawn, you will not receive a refund. Hunters may apply for each area once annually.

Drawing Information: Drawings are held in early September. Results will be posted on the DOW website at www.ohiodnr.com/wildlife in early September. Applicants not chosen to participate will not be notified. Hunters chosen to participate will receive the necessary permit and instructions in the mail, including the date and location of the hunt. All participants must be properly licensed.

Controlled Hunt Permits are transferable.

All participants must be properly licensed. Please see the new Hunting Regulations (due out in August) and Publication 295 (due out in late September).

Handicapped-accessible blinds are available.Adult attendants do not need to possess a hunting license or permit.

If you shoot a banded duck or goose, you may keep the band, however call and report the band number. Band numbers can be reported by calling 1-800-327-BAND (1-800-327-2263) or by visiting http://www.pwrc.usgs.gov/bbl
