La Crosse
Fishery Resource Office works on many projects with
various state and federal agencies and internal partners
listed below.
La
Crosse Fish Health Center (FHC)
The
La Crosse Fish Health Center was established in 1962
and provides fish health inspection services to six
national and four tribal fish hatcheries, assists state
and private fish hatcheries in diagnosing and controlling
infectious disease agents, provides technical assistance
regarding fish health and propagation and performs inspections
on wild fish populations.
Genoa
National Fish Hatchery
The Upper Mississippi River Wildlife and Fish Act of
1931 helped to establish Genoa National Fish Hatchery
(NFH) in 1932. The hatchery is located along the upper
Mississippi River on 155 acres and raises cold, cool
and warm water species of fish and aquatic animals. Nearly
25 species of fish are raised in 67 acres of ponds.
The hatchery hatches and rears wild lake trout and coaster
brook trout for future broodstock and cultures the endangered
species, Higgins' eye pearlymussel, for restoration
in the upper Mississippi River Ecosystem. The hatchery
also provides opportunities for self-guided and guided
tours and is open to the public.
Friends
of the Upper Mississippi Fishery Services
The
Friends of the Upper Mississippi Fishery Services is
a newly created organization that works with the La
Crosse FRO, La Crosse FHC and Genoa NFH to enhance,
restore and protect aquatic resources in the Upper Mississippi
River Ecosystem. Members provide recreational fishing
and outreach activities for the public. The organization
meets about once a month in Genoa or La Crosse. Contact
the La Crosse FRO (see left) for more information.
