Recreation

Visitors enjoy many activities at Horicon refuge including hiking, bicycling, hunting, fishing, wildlife observation, photography and educational programs and there are many facilities available at Horicon refuge to make your visit more enjoyable.

• The Highway 49 Wildlife Viewing Area is located on State Highway 49 just west of County Road Z and is open daily year-round.

• The Horicon TernPike Auto Tour Route located on State Highway 49, just east of the city of Waupun, is open daily year-round, weather permitting. Three hiking trails are located here along with a floating boardwalk and bicycling and hiking access to the Wild Goose State Trail.

• Two hiking trails are located at the Bud Cook Hiking Area on Point Road, just south of Highway 49 and County Road Z, along with an observation platform and spotting scope.

• Main Dike Road, a two-level gravel road located off of County Road TW, is open daily, year-round, weather permitting.

• Also interior roads such as Ledge and Rockvale Roads and State Highway 49 offer excellent viewing opportunities for wildlife.

• The Horicon refuge visitor center is located on County Road Z, 3.5 miles south of State Highway 49 on the east side of the refuge and has many educational exhibits and the Coot's Corner bookstore. The visitor center is open Monday throught Friday from 7:30 am-4:00 pm year-round and on weekends during the fall.

For your own safety and the safety of wildlife, please remember that while visiting the refuge you and your dog should remain on the trails at all time, your dog must remain leashed and you must pick up after your dog.

Also remember that the posted speed limit on State Highway 49 is 55 mph and the refuge is open during daylight hours only.

Education

Environmental education programs for pre-school through post-secondary students include on-site field trips and off-site classroom presentations. Additional resources include educational trunks and materials for loan.

Educational programs are also available for organized groups, including on-site step-on bus tours and on-site and off-site presentations pertaining to refuge wildlife, recreation or management.

Reservations and appointments are required. Reservations may only be made for the current calendar year and are first-come, first served so schedule early. Please contact Erin Railsback, Visitor Services Manager, at (920) 387-2658 ext. 24 or email erin_railsback@fws.gov.
