2008 Federal Duck Stamp Contest

 

January 10 Traditional Trapping - (7:00-8:00 p.m. at Horicon Refuge Visitor Center) History and basics of this traditional activity at the marsh.
March 13 Fish Management - (7:00-8:00 p.m. at Horicon Refuge Visitor Center) Overview of fish species and management at the marsh.
April 19-20 Old Marsh Road open to hiking/bicycling - Celebrate Earth Day by hiking or biking on Old Marsh Road. Daylight hours only. Adjacent dikes are closed.
May 1-23 starWisconsin Junior Duck Stamp Exhibit - On display at the Horicon Refuge Visitor Center. See artwork from the 2008 contest.
May 8 Wildflowers of Wisconsin - (7:00-8:00 p.m. at Horicon Refuge Visitor Center) This program will teach you how to identify the many colors you find along the trail.
May 9-12 Horicon Marsh Bird Festival - Marsh-wide event. Guided birding hikes, bus and boat tours, kids activities, bird banding demos, live birds of prey and special exhibits. Visit the Horicon Marsh Bird Club for more information.
June Old Marsh road open to hiking/bicycling - Saturdays and Sundays in June, July and August. Closed weekdays. Daylight hours only. Adjacent dikes are closed.
June 12 A Prairie Primer - (7:00-8:00 p.m. at Horicon Refuge Visitor Center) Learn how to prepare, plant and maintain a prairie garden.
June 14 Redhead Trail Hike - (9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.) Celebrate National Trails Day with a hike through field, forest and wetland. Meet at the main lot at the Auto Tour Route off Hwy. 49. Trail: 2.5 miles - easy to moderate difficulty. Bring water and sturdy shoes.
July Old Marsh road open to hiking/bicycling - Saturdays and Sundays in June, July and August. Closed weekdays. Daylight hours only. Adjacent dikes are closed.
July 10 A Potluck Family Concert - (7:00-8:00 at Horicon Refuge Visitor Center). Join folksinger David H.B. Drake for songs, poems, and stories accompanied by an array of musical instruments. Sponsored by the Friends of Horicon National Wildlife Refuge.
August Old Marsh road open to hiking/bicycling - Saturdays and Sundays in June, July and August. Closed weekdays. Daylight hours only. Adjacent dikes are closed.
August 4-22 starFederal Duck Stamp Artwork Exhibit - On display at the Horicon Refuge Visitor Center. The Federal Duck Stamp provides critical funding for the purchase of wetland habitat (National Wildlife Refuges) for migratory birds and other wildlife.
September 6-November 2 Visitor Center open weekends - during fall migration in addition to regular hours (Monday-Friday).
Saturdays - 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
Sundays - 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
September 6 Prairie Seed Collecting - (9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.) Celebrate your National Public Lands by joining us to harvest native prairie plant seeds for use in restoration projects through out the Refuge. Long pants, sturdy shoes and gloves are recommend. Meet at the Horicon Refuge Visitor Center.
October 11 National Wildlife Refuge Celebration - (9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.) Celebrate National Wildlife Refuges with activities at Horicon Refuge! Morning 5K run/walk on Auto Tour Route (check out the Fond du Lac Running Club for registration information). Activites and programs through out the day.
November 22-30 & December 11-14 Auto Tour Route Closed for deer gun seasons - Visitors are still welcome to use the area for hiking and other permissible activities but are required to wear blaze orange.
