Adams County
The 2009 nesting season is nearly over for Wisconsin Kirtland’s warblers, with only a few outcomes yet to be determined. At least five Adams County nests have fledged a minimum of 19 young, with two more nests still active. One nest which was still being incubated as of last Friday is the renest of a pair that was parasitized by cowbirds, and if successful, should fledge late next week. Last Tuesday, Nick discovered a new nest that was not previously known, containing four small Kirtland’s warblers. Notably, both of these nests are being attended by the same male, one which we had difficulty in tracking down to capture and band earlier this year. We eventually learned that his elusiveness was due to the fact that he was maintaining two separate territories. This is not the first time we have encountered this situation, as one of the birds last year was also found to have two different females and nests.
Marinette County
Kirtland’s warblers were found this year at two sites in Marinette County, and each was observed with a female. When visited today, the nest discovered last week contained three Kirtland’s warbler nestlings. We will check this nest again closer to its expected date of fledging, some time next week. The second bird is still on territory as of today, but his female has not been seen lately, and any nesting which may have occurred has apparently been unsuccessful. Information on Kirtland’s warblers in Marinette County is largely the result of the excellent observations of our volunteer Jack Swelstad, who has also kindly supplied the photos shown below.
