Automated Acoustic Bat ID Software Programs

Approved Programs

Specified versions of the programs identified below are approved by the Service for use in 2015 and beyond for presence/probable absence surveys for Indiana bats (Myotis sodalis). These programs have been independently tested by USGS researchers and passed the Service’s standardized test/validation process.

USGS Test Report 1 - 15 Sept 2014 (31-page PDF Adobe PDF Icon)
USGS Test Report 2 - 19 Jan 2015 (20-page PDF Adobe PDF Icon)

In 2015, these programs may also be used for presence/probable absence surveys for northern long-eared bats (Myotis septentrionalis).  Bat surveyors should bookmark this site and regularly check it to ensure that they are using an approved version(s) of each program. New software versions that represent significant changes to their classifiers will require additional testing by USGS before they are approved for use.

Software developers that wish to have their program/new versions evaluated by the Service should contact Andy King at andrew_king@fws.gov.

BCID Program (Ryan Allen, Bat Call Identification, Inc.),
Version 2.7b

According to www.batcallid.com, “BCID East is a powerful application that allows users to automate the identification process of bats in the Midwest and North Eastern United States.” This program is currently available for purchase from the batcallid website listed above.  Questions regarding this program should be directed to Mr. Allen at mrallens@batcallid.com.

EchoClass (Eric Britzke, ERDC),
Version 3.1

The Service funded Dr. Eric Britzke with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center in Vicksburg, Mississippi to develop an automated acoustic bat identification software program suitable throughout the range of the Indiana bat.  Version 2.0 is no longer available. Surveyors should now use Version 3.0, which is publicly available for use (free of charge) and may be downloaded from the links below.

Kaleidoscope® Pro (Wildlife Acoustics, Inc.)

Version 2.2.2

According to Wildlife Acoustics, “Kaleidoscope Pro sets new standards for bat auto ID software and is one of fastest, easiest-to-use, and most flexible bat auto ID applications available.”  It is capable of working from full-spectrum, zero-crossing, or time expansion recordings. Kaleidoscope is available for both a free two-week trial period and/or purchase. Visit the WA website at  http://www.wildlifeacoustics.com/products/kaleidoscope-software

Candidate Programs

SonoBat™ (Joe Szewczak)

SonoBat is coordinating with the Service and USGS in preparation of being tested.  We will post any new information regarding a change in this program’s status as soon as possible.  In the interim, it is considered a candidate program and therefore is not yet approved for stand-alone use in presence/absence surveys.
