Moose Hunting Permits 1971–1997

Moose hunting began in 1971 in northwest Minnesota. In 1985 hunting was closed in the Red Lake Wildlife Management Area in response to low moose densities. Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge closed moose hunting in 1994, and permit numbers were greatly reduced in Viking. Viking was closed to moose hunting in 1997. Thus, man's impacts as a predator on moose have been regulated.

Table 1: Moose Hunting Permits Issued and (Harvest) for Zones
1 , 2 , 3, 4, 8, and 11 in Northwest Minnesota (1971-1997) for any Age or Sex Moose.
Note: There were only 3 zones in northwest Minnesota in 1971, by 1979 there were 11 zones in northwest Minnesota. Therefore, it is difficult to make direct comparisons for any area except Zone 2.

Columns in red indicate Zones where study areas are located.

Notes:
     Zone 1
boundaries changed in 1981 and became smaller in size.
Zone 1 was divided into two Zones - 1A (south) and 1B (north); 1A includes Red Lake WMA.
Zone 4 was created, but boundaries changed dramatically in the following year.
For simplicity and data comparison, permit/harvest data were left in Zone 3.

Zone 8 was divided into two Zones - 8A (east) and 8B (west); 8A includes Viking Study Area.

In 1993 the Minnesota Department of Natural resources went to an annual hunt statewide to recover non-hunting mortality in certain areas.

Not all zones in northwest Minnesota were included in above table.

(Harvest #)
indicates the harvest for both zones A and B.
