Abstract:
These boundaries are simplified from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Real Estate Interest data layer containing polygons representing tracts of land (parcels) in which the Service has a property interest. The Hawaiian Islands National Wildlife Refuge has been omitted. Interior boundaries between parcels were dissolved to produce a single set of simplified external boundaries for each feature. These are resource grade mapping representations of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service boundaries. For legal descriptions of the land represented here contact the USFWS Realty Office. This map layer was compiled by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Although these boundaries represent lands administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, not all areas are open to the public. Some fragile habitats need to be protected from human traffic and some management areas are closed. The public is urged to contact specific Refuges or other conservation areas before visiting.
Purpose:
This data set depicts simplified boundaries of lands administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service including National Wildlife Refuges, National Fish Hatcheries, FWS administrative sites, and other conservation areas.
Supplemental_Information:
The FwsInterest feature class is an aggregated data layer derived by appending separate regional feature data sets into a single national data set that presents lands that USFWS has an ownership or management interest in. (FwsInterest is available at: <http://www.fws.gov/GIS/data/CadastralDB/FwsInterest.zip> ) This data set is simplified from FwsInterest, interior boundaries have been dissolved and resultant splinters and dangles have been manually edited. The spatial and positional accuracy of this information will vary depending on the original source data and methods utilized. All data sources are not listed in this document but are maintained for each region and can be requested. We strive to improve the accuracy of this data and incorporate more reliable information when available. Data depicting easement lands in Region 6, the Mountain-Prairie Region, is not included in the FwsInterest feature class as it does not represent the acreage of wetland or grassland resources included in the easement contracts. The Hawaiian Islands National Wildlife Refuge is not delineated. This data set does not distinguish Refuges or other areas that are open to the public from those that are closed to the public for any reason. The public is urged to contact specific Refuges for information about public access.

Wildlife Refuges and other areas were queried from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Cadastral Data Geodatabase FWSInterest Feature Class using the following criteria: lands classed as Fee Title or Secondary interest to other federal agency. The resultant polygons were then dissolved using the Organization Name, Organization Code and Organization Type as the dissolve fields, and a resolution of 0.000000009 Decimal Degree and a tolerance of 0.000005 Decimal Degree. Resultant splinters and dangles were manually edited.
