On Thursday July 24th, 2014, fish biologists Michael Goehle and Eric Snyder held an aquatics workshop for 108 school aged children at the Dunkirk Camp and Conference Center in Dunkirk, NY. The biologists discussed how to assess the overall health and community structure of an aquatic ecosystem through the use of electrofishing and aquatic invertebrate sampling. The importance of these ecosystems was demonstrated by letting students collect insects and fish through the use of “D” frame nets and seeing first-hand how the electrofishing works and how it aides biologists in efficiently sampling ecosystems.
