On June 14 Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge held its 3rd annual disabled veterans fishing event. This year the event took place at a new location, with easy access to a 50 acre lake and a newly installed handicapped accessible fishing dock and kayak launch. All boating and fishing equipment, along with bait were provided, as well as any needed assistance for the 30 veterans who attended. Many of the veterans came by bus from The Lyons VA facility located in Lyons, NJ. Volunteer members from our local partner, Double V Rod and Gun Club, came out in force to honor the veterans and provide personal assistance with fishing and kayaking. In addition, the club provided a bountiful feast through the generous donations of local merchants. Barbeque chicken, hamburgers and hotdogs were cooked to perfection by volunteer, Ray Lufkins.
