On March 23, Polly Wheeler became the new Assistant Regional Director for the National Wildlife Refuge System in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Pacific Southwest Region (Region 8).

The position was formerly held by Marge Kolar, who retired on September 3, 2013.

Polly comes to the Region 8 office in Sacramento after nearly three years as Deputy Chief of Refuges for Region 7 in Anchorage, Alaska. In her new role, she oversees 50 wildlife refuges in California, Nevada, and the Klamath Basin of Oregon totaling over 2 million acres of habitats.

She started her career as a researcher with private organizations in Fairbanks, Alaska, including one that was her own business. She went on to join the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, where she worked on Alaskan subsistence issues. That work led her to the Service’s Alaska Region, where she continued subsistence work and eventually moved over to the Refuge Program.

In addition to her full-time professional employment, Polly has extensive experience teaching at the college level. Her teaching skills proved beneficial to the Service, as she’s served as an instructor at the National Conservation Training Center in West Virginia on numerous occasions since joining the agency.

She received a master’s degree in Anthropology from the University of Alaska in Fairbanks and a doctoral degree in Anthropology from the University of Alberta.

Polly is married and has two dogs. When she isn’t in the office, she can often be found pursuing her passion for running.

Michael Woodbridge is a public affairs officer at the Pacific Southwest Regional Office in Sacramento, California.
